expecting the people who paid 100m for Enzo, 60m for Mudryk, 60m for Gittens, 55m for Lavia, 40m for Garnacho, 25m for Jorgensen, 40m for Disasi to be smart is wishful thinking..... we have always paid inflated the fee with little quality in return.... and now are facing consequences for it
Great article and I think it smacks of the reality we all have to face up to. That reality is not just Chelsea’s issue, it’s most clubs issues. Fortunately with the rules that have been in place for the last few years we have seen more control on wages throughout football (with a few exceptions for players like Mbappé, Harland to name 2). The football world has changed and there are now many clubs following a similar philosophy to the one we have at Chelsea as much as we don’t like it. Outside the Premier League with the exception of perhaps three or four clubs it’s the norm it’s only the wealth of the PL that has kept transfer fees as high as they are for English bass players. Adam Wharton is a decent player but he certainly not worth £100 million plus and we shouldn’t be looking to buy these players whether we think they’re good or not, those days are gone.
You know what, I've thought a lot in the past about exactly what The Score wrote in this article and I don't see that we're doing this summer. Not at all. The big brains are way too proud of themselves to achieve such a sporting success after making such rookie mistakes over the past a few years.
The dead wood is way too heavy now and it will be so hard to even dispose 50% of it (let's say 10 players). On top of that elite players (who will raise the level) won't be temped by our lovely project as CFC would be their last pick if they were to pick and choose.
Start smart, work hard for a few years, gain the level you had in the past, find a solution for new stadium to develop the brand. All this is an enormous task that takes years!!!
So....I have no hopes for this summer and the upcoming season.
I totally understand where you’re coming from Mitch but at 31 and 32 next season they both will also be looking at the length of contract as matches the salary package. They are on £150,000 and £200,000 respectively currently but neither I expect will anticipate a 3+ year contract at that level going forward. Signing either of these for £125,000-£150,000 for a two / three year period will add a type of experience we seek without upsetting our wage structure.
Bowen at £40m and £150k / week is a massive financial risk given his age. That's the problem. There's no re-sale value and I imagine he's WHU's highest earner, and likely on a lot more than many players we have.
The additional variable not in the debate, is this; Bowen could continue to earn £150k a week - but play in the Championship, or £100k a week and play PL football, and maybe win a domestic cup. Ultimately, the priorities of any player’s career is down to the individual. But if I’m Bowen - in the twilight of my career, I know which choice I’d take!
I get that. But he may still find Chelsea appealing, and if so then he may be willing to accept our conditions. Still think he'd be a smart signing if so.

100%

Established players = high wages. That's why we don't sign them.
How much is Ake on at Man City? How much was Stones on? You can't sign these players because it will instantly screw up the wage structure.

Yes - 100% agree with this. I'd add Bowen as being one of those smart signings; someone who immediately adds experience and value to the whole squad.
The scouts and directors need to work extra hard and XA will need to apply a lot of pressure where he can.
