I completely agree regarding not being held to ransom by players wanting huge salaries. The squad is still unbalanced after 4 transfer windows which is almost unforgivable. I don’t know why people think we are going to finish top four I would be amazed if we do. I’m not looking forward to Barrow or Shamrock Rovers.
I think everyone’s got to realise that this is the start of what’s gonna happen throughout the Premier League and he’s already happening in Europes top five leagues already. Over got the last 12 months both transfer fees and salaries have decreased. It had already got out of control and thankfully the likes of our ownership are standing firm as a number of our Premier League clubs. We’re still won the top player players in the PL and across Europe, let’s put that into perspective.
Reduce transfer fees and lower wages means less money going to those agents that create the situations that we are talking about. We have had two or three of those this summer where the agent has had a significant role to the detriment. I believe of the and the possibility of them joining Chelsea. More money in the club will be to the benefit of the supporters as it will help hold down season ticket prices.
Conclusion, @ The Score I totally agree with every aspect of your article which I thank you for and I like many others felt for some time that Duran was the right solution. He scored a cracking header yesterday. Added to that since your article was posted Jackson assigned a new contract for those of us that were at the game today we saw that he can scare Centre Halves with his turn of pace and a quick feet. Add to that today was his 16th non-penalty goal in 2024. He’s not perfect, he’s learning, he’s becoming a better team player and he’s not too shoddy either.
do you know exactly how much was Osimhen asking? We have been in his tow for a year now so its naive to think we didnt know about his demands. Also this logic of low wages that alot of Clearlake fans brag about and present like a trophy is flawed. Top players will demand top money be it the ones we try to get from outside or the ones that we currently have at the club (when they reach those heights).
There is a direct corelation of salaries and club success while less so of the inflated transfer fee (that we pay in most instances) and club success.
Paying 60-70K to 3-4 avg players is worse then paying 200-250K to a top player. This logic is flawed so stop falling for it. The money you are giving to Felix and KDH (we didnt need either) would have got you Osimhen. The money you are paying Arsenal to play Sterling and then paying Sancho and Mudryk would have got you Olise or Nico Williams. Top players will demand top money and they will make you money by making the team more successful and you can still have an incentive based structure in place for all the players.
This saving in wages has an opportunity cost which is more damaging. When you pay premium / high prices for the players the accumulated amortization will eat into any wages saved.
When you sign a good few average players on lowish wages the saving in wages will be lost due to the loss in revenue due to poor season finishes or lack of CL football and lack of sponsorship income due to a lack of faith in the project by the sponsors.
We are football fans. A football club is always judged on its on field success. We did not fall in love with the game and the club due to low wages and Opex. Yes, run a sustainable business but prioritize on field success. Stop taking opportunistic decisions if footballing wise they make you suffer.
Stop falling for the Clearlake PR, stop falling for their empty talk about success. Ambition is not spending a ton on money on some good, some average and some players that are not needed. Ambition is taking sound footballing decisions and spending money to make the team successful rather then making it into a player trading platform.
I know people complain about not being a serious club anymore. But I really can't find fault in the wages model in the current environment. The financial regs are just getting tighter, the punishments harsher. We could have one or two big earners, but the rest of the squad would then be much further off. And of course, it's always a team game. Given the players we mow have, which includes a lot of attacking talent, I'd much rather the coaching staff and players all just focused on working together on structure, understanding and set pieces, so we can finally look like a team that knows eachother.
But why would Gyokeres have very high wages? I am sure we can find a good structure for him. Surely, he can't be on big wages right now at Sporting and even moving to Chelsea we can still offer a higher salary no?
I liked Duran when linked and would not have been upset with that. I agree on the Toney front. He doesn't look like he's been in a good place football wise for 12-18 months. And he doesn't press and only done well in a team that doesn't maintain possession. Another risk and of course high wages.

Should have gone for Duran - Premier league experience, a natural finisher, right age profile, not commanding huge wages

Agree with not breaking our wage structure and also that we should’ve set a deadline for Osimhen and had alternatives lined up.
It is impressive that we cut our wage bill by more than 50% so I’ll give the SDs credit for that.

The thing is at NO point was Oshimen ever going to lower his £10 million a year wages.
Why waste time on negotiating with him and his agent.
The whole football world knew, we had to sign a number 9.
Yet we failed to do so.
Mark my words and I have been banging on about signing an elite striker for 2 years!!
This will come back & bite us JUST like last. season.
We are now in a real battle for Top 8.
The " let Jackson develop " brigade have got what they wished for!!
And I'm not on about the games against the Palaces & Ipswichs of this world.
I'm on about the big, big games. The ones where we failed so miserably last year.
I don't think, Van Djik, Saliba & Dias etc will be losing any sleep over facing Nicholas " Offside Jackson" in the big games.
Over a billion spent on crap like KDH, Badasheille ;etc..
Yet not enough in the pot to pay for the Elite striker we so badly needed.
Dress it up anyway you like with PSR
The owners have failed miserably.
Hi Darren
There I was trying to work out my post and you’d already done it for me.
I think I said before the end of the window that I was concerned the SDs would have a négociation expecting to fail.
Ffs is your not going to pay and match his Napoli wages which is what he said he wanted why are you in the same room?
I think we go back for osihmen in January or sign gyokares or Sesko next summer.
I can’t lie it stings not getting him, but maybe Duran gets 10-15 goals for Villa this year and we are more open to signing him.
Only time will tell
The other big message the club is sending out is that if you don't perform your days are numbered. Top 3 should be possible this year.

Also, what about Lois Openda? he has release clause for 2025 I think too
But why would Gyokeres have very high wages? I am sure we can find a good structure for him. Surely, he can't be on big wages right now at Sporting and even moving to Chelsea we can still offer a higher salary no?
We will regret not taking Duran for £35m. I love Ferguson but he will be £85m+.
Either of those two would instantly make us a more complete squad.
The only positive for me was that we did not buy Toney who would have been an unmitigated disaster.

Agree with this. Jhon Duran could have been plan B and a decent understudy to Jackson. Happy with Jackson myself but only 1 striker is a risk.
