Victor Osimhen: Lets look a little deeper

Like many I have seen Osimhen play, bur far from regularly, lets see what he is all about......

As you will see above Victor already has a link to Chelsea, and if anyone has listened to John Obi Mikel’s podcast he is certainly routing for us to sign Osimhen soon.

I am going to take a look at Osimhen from some different angles. Statistically, The Eye Test & His Playstyle.

The Stats:

Over the last year he is in the top 10% of Forwards in Europe for all of the following metrics; Goals, Goals&Assists, Non-penalty goals, shots per90, touches in the penalty area, shots on target, creating shots, penalty kicks and % of aerial duels won.

As you will see he is a very clinical out and out number 9. He focuses solely on scoring goals and taking shots, although this is excellent I do have a slight issue with this, I will come onto this in my overview at the end.

The Eye Test:

He is athletic, skillful, brilliant in the air and clinical. Incredibly good in tight spaces, strong and his positioning is excellent, he always seems to be in the right place at the right time.

At times a seems a little unorthodox and slightly clumsy. I am not yet sold on his all round play and ability to bring players in to the game. His passing and creating numbers are very poor and this is my only issue with Osimhen. BUT, this is something that can be worked on and can be improved and quickly under the right coaching.

Playstyle:

I have already touched on elements of this during this article.

He is 185cm tall, looks to attack space, happy to receive the ball with his back to goal and has a really good first touch.

His runs behind the lines are generally pretty well timed and he has very low offside numbers for a player of his style.

He is absolutely rapid and overall just a modern day number 9.

Overview:

We are not a massively creative side against the sort of teams where we need a clinical striker, and any striker we sign needs to be able to be able to create some chances for themselves and link play really well.

As we saw at the weekend, against the better sides who come out and attack us we can more than hold our own in the creative and goal scoring departments. Against Brentford a couple of weeks before the City game we faced a side who are completely organised, are comfortable in actioning this type of game plan (low-block) and then being ruthless on the counter attack. This is why we need an all round number 9 and not just a clinical one.

I am being extremely picky.
