Throwback Matches: Chelsea 2 v 0 Manchester City - 2010/11
Today I am throwing it back to March 2011
Good Evening Ladies and Gents,
Now it wouldn’t surprise me if many of you don’t remember this game or it isn’t particularly memorable for yourselves, but for me this is one of my favourite Chelsea games.
Not only was Ramires’ goal our goal of the season that year, it was so special the way he jinked through the defenders and slotted it home, the birth of a future cult hero at the club, a player I absolutely adored for so many years it felt as though that was his huge breakthrough at The Bridge.
The other reason this game is so significant in my memory, this was the only game I went to during that season and it fell on my 14th Birthday, my Mum took me to the game as my birthday present and my Dad bought me that home top with my surname and no14 on it, which I still have safely stored away!
On to the game……
It was a big game in the top 4 race, we were 2 points behind City in 4th place before the game knowing that if we win we go 1 point above them and into 3rd place, leaving us 5 points clear of Spurs’ with 9 games to play, it would also only leave us 4 points behind Arsenal and with a chance of catching them u and leap frogging them into 2nd.
The lineups were interesting with City playing a fairly defensive looking 4-5-1 with Barry and De Jong holding, Toure just in front of them, Milner right midfield and Silva on the left.
Chelsea lined up in a 4-3-3 with Kalou on the right, Torres down the middle and Malouda off the left.
David Luiz got off the mark in a Chelsea shirt by scoring the opener on the 78th minute, what we all assumed would be the loan goal in this match. Until Ramires did what he did with his goal, the goal was crazy!
Chelsea absolutely dominated this match from a possession point of view, whilst also controlling pretty much every stat available, a proper Chelsea performance under don Carlo.
Thank you all for reading and if you have any suggestions for games for me to throwback to then please let me know.
