It was announced over the weekend that Chelsea’s Pedro Neto had signed a new contract extension at the club, with a couple others to soon follow suit.
Now, it’s worth saying that just because a player signs a new contract, it does not mean they are declaring their future to a club. Sometimes it even means the opposite. I am not saying that any of these new contracts at Chelsea will have these, but you see many examples of players signing new deals that end up having hidden release clauses or certain conditions allowing them to leave the club, basically making it easier for them to leave, should they wish to. Also, it’s simply a way for a player to earn more money, which has been an issue at Chelsea with the new restricted wage structure. So all I am saying with this is that signing a new contract does not always mean the player is staying at the club for the long term.
However, in Neto’s case, there has very much been a real turnaround in feelings on his part.
