Ben Chilwell injury not serious and he's in contention to play Wednesday
The left back went off injured for England at the weekend
Chelsea left back Ben Chilwell gave Blues fans a real cause for concern on Sunday night when he came off injured holding his back in England's defeat to Belgium.
It would be just our luck to be struck down with another serious injury to a key player during the painfully frustrating international break, especially a player who has been in such fine form like Chilwell.
Thankfully, the injury does not appear to be a serious one. The Telegraph's Chelsea insider Matt Law has confirmed that it was just a back spasm, indicating that there should not be any real issues.
Chilwell will now see how the pain settles down, but this is certainly a very positive sign.
He is due to play for England again on Wednesday evening in their friendly with Iceland, and England’s medical staff have assessed Chilwell and deem him to be in contention to play in the match.
We will need to wait and see whether he will be fit and available for Chelsea's next match against Newcastle United this Saturday, but this sounds very positive all the same.
My verdict?
This is massive news if it does transpire to be nothing serious, Chilwell has been on fire for Chelsea since joining this summer and he has become more than important for Frank Lampard.
The Blues boss chased Chilwell for some time, and it was the former Leicester City man that he wanted to sign, and him only. This just goes to show how much he is rated and valued by Lampard, and his performances on the pitch since arriving shows exactly why.
The left back area was certainly one of our problematic areas last season and one that badly needed addressing. Chilwell has single handily solved that issue in an instant.
My only fear though is injury - Emerson Palmieri and Marcos Alonso just don't bring the same impact, threat, and defensive stability as Chilwell brings.
